Some stories arrive loudly. This one arrived by sitting down and waiting.
For years, many of you have walked with me through short stories on StoryNook. Stories that travelled through forgotten histories, unnamed griefs, quiet courage, and lives that rarely ask to be remembered but deserve to be. This book grew out of that same soil. It did not begin as a plan. It began as a return.
What Remains: A Life Practised Carefully is my first officially published novel. It is inspired by the lives of my maternal grandparents, Harry Nelson Robson and Dipti Robson. Not as history lessons. Not as nostalgia. But as a study in how a life can be lived with discipline, gentleness, restraint, and care.
This is not a dramatic book. There are no grand twists waiting around corners. Instead, it pays attention. To routines. To waiting. To houses that slowly fill and empty. To the way love expresses itself not in declarations, but in consistency. To the courage of staying when leaving would have been easier.
Many of you who read my stories here know that I have always been drawn to what lingers rather than what explodes. This novel lives entirely in that space. It listens more than it speaks. It trusts the reader to arrive at meaning without being led by the hand.
If you have ever felt that the smallest lives often carry the deepest truths, this book is for you. If you believe that memory does not shout but breathes quietly beside us, you may find something familiar here.

Yes I finally took the leap. It was long awaited. I was also learning the different ways to publish the book, and something that suited me best. For this one I did it with KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing). It has its plus and minus points. Let’s see how it goes. But one thing is sure, I will keep on publishing now by the grace of God.

I found it fairly easy to get this done. I did it all by myself, only by studying a bit on Google and watching a few videos. Though the subject of publishing on KDP is vast, there’s lots to learn. This was my first experiment.

How do you publish there ?

You can sign in with your amazon account. Then its pretty easy. Ofcourse you need to upload manuscripts according to their formats etc. You need to study it a bit over the internet, then you will come to know much. I am still very new to it, this is my first book through KDP.

Now itβs chargeable. I published my first short story book β Love of Rain β free of cost. My second book has been published in two languages. In Bengali,β বাঀাসΰ§ΰ¦° ΰ¦ΰ§ΰ¦ΰ¦―ΰ¦Όΰ¦Ύβ was free of cost . The English version,β The Touch of Breezeβ was chargeable. Now they stopped free publishing

You honour me greatly by saying this. If simplicity, simple lives, real lives in my stories have stuck with you, then I am sure that you would like my novel.
This being my first published work in print, it is very special to me.
I would really treasure you reading it, and letting me know how you felt. It is a true story though, so there was no scope for dramatisation in this novel.

Thatβs more than alright, I read biographies and love history. And this sounds like it would be a comfy read at home. If I wanted to have it autographed, how would I go about it?

Well that would not be very difficult. But I think it will be very costly to send the book to India and then sign it and send it back to US.
I don’t even have an author’s copy as of not. As the book is printed in the US. It’s $6 in the US. To buy it in India I have to pay an additional $16 shipping charge.
So I guess if you courier me the book for signing it might cost around $32 to send it from the US to India and back to US.
The single copy that I had ordered, is unfortunately stuck in India customs in Delhi due to an address mistake. That is another unfortunate story, which I think will sort out, but will take time.

Though all of us book lovers love paperback, for now it seems that we have to be satisfied with kindle versions.

I prefer hard covers personally. Or at least the semi hard covers. Paperbacks are good for when you travel around in a car or bus.

Dear Kajoli, my first Book/ novel “What Remains: A Life Practised Carefully” is printed and published in US, so the paperback, though available in India through Amazon.com is a bit costly for Indian consumbers, as you have to pay 3 times the books cost on shipping.
However the Kindle version is available for INR 271/- in India. If you don’t have a kindle device, you can download the kindle app on your mobile from play store and read it. It is free for Kindle Unlimited customers.

I have Kindle but the link takes me to Amazon international and does not allow me to download the INR 271 version because my Amazon address is Indian.

Well it worked for my Kindle. I bought it from Amazon.com, just had to give my PAN card and AADHAR card, there are options to add other KYC docs also. You need to do it only once with Amazon.com then you can do future international purchases. Try doing it (accessing Amazon.com) from a laptop or a desktop rather than your Kindle or mobile for the first time.

You can easily buy it from Amazon.com. I bought it from Amazon.com for Rs. 271/- sitting here from Kolkata. It’s good to have access in both Amazon.com and Amazon.in. Since this book is published in the US, it will not be available on Amazon.in.

Sure I will. I have my Amazon prime subscription in Amazon.in and they are giving an option to change to Amazon.com for purchasing the book, which is not feasible for me as I buy products in India.
I believe there is an option in KDP which allows you to make the book available in different countries.
