Ramkingkong: AUDIO STORY

In the narrow lanes of North Kolkata once lived a man who seemed carved from myth. Towering at seven and a half feet and weighing more than 150 kilos, Ramkinkar Dey looked less like an ordinary human and more like a legend walking among people. After watching the film King Kong in a cinema hall in Chowringhee in 1933, someone in the crowd jokingly called him “Ramkingkong”. The name stayed with him forever.

This story revisits the life of that gentle giant of old Kolkata. Behind the extraordinary height and strength was a simple man who became a quiet neighbourhood legend, remembered with affection by those who saw him walk the streets.

Listen to the audio version of “Ramkingkong” and step into a nostalgic slice of Kolkata’s past where cinema, memory, and a remarkable human presence came together to create a story that still echoes through time.

Some of my books (collection of short stories, novels, and more) are available in print and digital editions. They gather many unique journeys, quieter questions, and stories that continue beyond this page.

  2. “Ne kadar etkileyici bir hikâye… Ramkingkong’un sıradan bir insandan çok bir efsane gibi anılması, sinemanın ve hafızanın nasıl iç içe geçtiğini gösteriyor. Eski Kalküta’nın dar sokaklarında böyle bir karakterin yaşamış olması, geçmişin sıcaklığını ve insan hikâyelerinin gücünü hissettiriyor. Paylaştığınız bu nostaljik kesit için teşekkür ederim.”

Thank you so much for this beautifully expressed reflection.

What moved me while writing “Ramkingkong” was precisely that delicate space where memory begins to outgrow fact and gently turns a man into a legend. Old Calcutta has always had a way of holding on to its people like that, wrapping them in stories, in whispers, in affectionate exaggerations that outlive time itself.

I am truly glad the story carried that warmth across to you. It is readers like you who keep these forgotten giants walking our streets, long after they are gone.

      3. Really enjoying your storytelling and now audio content! Just curious if it’s your voice, a voice artist, or AI behind the narration?

It’s AI voice generation through ElevenLabs, to save time. I am also trying to record some with a real human voice, requesting friends. Maybe someday I will record in my own voice.
