As Bhangarh Fort slowly surrendered its voice to the coming silence…
The first thing Raghav noticed was that the peacocks had stopped dancing. For twenty years he had played the sarangi in the courtyards of Bhangarh Fort, and during every monsoon the peacocks arrived before the rain. They descended from the surrounding hills, spread their emerald tails beneath gathering clouds, and turned the ruined stones of old temples and palace gardens into stages for their impossible beauty. The birds always knew. They sensed storms before people did. They sensed snakes beneath grass before shepherds noticed them. They sensed approaching leopards before dogs began barking. That year they sensed something else. The clouds arrived, the humidity thickened, and the scent of rain drifted across the Aravalli hills. Yet the peacocks remained silent. No dancing. No cries. Nothing…

The stones were never silent. Long before they became monuments, they listened. They watched kings arrive and disappear, armies march, artists create, lovers part, gatekeepers wait, and ordinary lives unfold within extraordinary walls. History remembers the empires. The forts remembered everything else.
This story is part of my fifth published book, Empires Left in Stone – Twenty Short Stories from the Forts of India.
Across twenty stories inspired by twenty remarkable Indian forts, I have tried to reimagine the quieter lives that history rarely records. A forgotten attendant. A musician. A sculptor. A trader’s daughter. A horse. A caretaker. Even a ruined fort that remembers centuries of silence. Each story approaches history through a different voice, revealing not the spectacle of empire, but the humanity that lingered within its walls.
These are not historical reconstructions. They are literary journeys through memory, atmosphere, and imagination, inspired by real places that continue to stand across India long after the empires that built them have faded.
If this story speaks to you, I hope you’ll consider exploring the complete collection:
If you have found something here that stayed with you, some of my other books (collection of short stories, novels, and more) are now available in print and digital editions. They gather many unique journeys, quieter questions, and stories that continue beyond this page.
Beautifully crafted. 👏

What a mesmerizing introduction! From the very first line, you create an atmosphere that is haunting, lyrical, and impossible to leave. The image of the peacocks falling silent before the unseen danger is a powerful metaphor that immediately draws the reader into the mystery of Bhangarh Fort.
I especially loved this thought: “History remembers the empires. The forts remembered everything else.” What a profound and beautiful line! It perfectly captures the spirit of your work—giving voice to the forgotten lives that existed beyond kings and battles.

Dear Verma’ji, thank you so much for your thoughtful and generous comment. I am especially pleased that the opening created the atmosphere I had hoped for. Bhangarh Fort is surrounded by so many stories and legends that I wanted the mystery to emerge gently, through the landscape itself, before a single unexplained event took place. Sometimes silence can create a greater sense of unease than anything we actually see.
Your appreciation of the line, “History remembers the empires. The forts remembered everything else,” means a great deal to me. Although each story in this collection explores a different fort and a different moment in history, they are all connected by that one central idea: that behind every legend, every battle, and every kingdom were countless ordinary lives that deserve to be remembered too.
Thank you, as always, for your unwavering encouragement and for reading these stories with such care. Your reflections have become a valued part of this journey through Empires Left in Stone.

A beautifully atmospheric piece that blends mystery, history, and emotion. The imagery of Bhangarh Fort, the silent peacocks, and the fading melodies creates a powerful sense of nostalgia and wonder. A captivating story that brings forgotten places and their hidden voices back to life. ✨🏰

Dear Safia, thank you so much for your thoughtful and encouraging words. I am delighted that you connected with the atmosphere of the story. With Waiting for Dusk, I wanted Bhangarh Fort to feel less like the setting of a ghost story and more like a place where memory, silence, and imagination quietly come together. The silent peacocks and the fading melodies were my way of suggesting that sometimes a place tells its story not through what we see, but through what we sense.
Your observation about bringing “forgotten places and their hidden voices back to life” is especially meaningful to me, because that lies at the very heart of Empires Left in Stone. Thank you once again for reading so thoughtfully. Your encouragement is deeply appreciated.

Dear Indrajit, thank you so much for your thoughtful comment.
I completely agree. Bhangarh Fort possesses an atmosphere that is difficult to describe but impossible to ignore. Whether one believes the legends or not, the silence there has a character of its own. While writing Waiting for Dusk, I wanted that atmosphere to become the true storyteller, allowing the reader’s imagination to fill the spaces that history leaves unexplained.
I’m delighted that this came across in the opening. Thank you once again for reading and for sharing your reflections.
